Calling for Photographers

Witness King Tides is a national community event asking photographers to capture images of the high water levels during the king tide and to share them on a website. These shared images are then geo-located on a map of Australia resulting in a collection of images that help visualise what our coasts may look like in the future.

This summer, the NSW king tides are expected to occur on Friday 14 December at 9:32am (AEDST) (1.95m) and Saturday 15 December 2012 at 10:24am in Sydney (AEDST) (1.94m).

With support from NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, all coastal and estuarine communities are encouraged to participate in this fun community event that can help to visualise potential future impacts on local coastal conditions, including sea level rise.

There will be photo opportunities at vulnerable, low lying coastal areas. Photos captured within the estuarine margins, an area where king tide is in close proximity to buildings or infrastructure, can be quite dramatic.

This is a positive project where the community can demonstrate their care and concern for their local coastal environment. It’s also a great opportunity for NSW Local Government to develop community understanding of how coastal conditions may change, and start a dialogue about what measures and information can build community resilience, and how communities can respond.

Environmental Art and Activism

This project begins as a set of proposals to the Kiama Arts Biz Conference held 19/10/12.

The theme of “Landscape” was chosen as the overall theme for Kiama’s cultural programme for 2013, culminating in Gerringong’s Lloyd Rees Festival. In keeping with this theme, I would like a committee of artists, including photographers, craftspeople, knitters, carvers, and so on to come together to lead us in a year of “environmental art”. There would be an exhibitions or series of exhibitions of the works throughout the year.  ~ Paula Gowans

To read more about Paula’s Environment Art project ideas click here

In a general sense, it is art that helps improve our relationship with the natural world. There is no definition set in stone. This living worldwide movement is growing and changing as you read this.

Much environmental art is ephemeral (made to disappear or transform), designed for a particular place (and can’t be moved) or involves collaborations between artists and others, such as scientists, educators or community groups (distributed ownership). These variables can make exhibiting this work difficult for traditional museums so we created greenmuseum.org: an online museum for global the environmental art movement.  ~ Greenmuseum.org
