Kats-Chernin was voted number 1 Australian composer in the recent ABC favourite composers countdown. Steel City Strings is one of regional Australia’s most exciting orchestras and was a finalist in APRA AMCOS Art Music awards 2019.

Music Association playing groups – musicians welcome to join

We continue to have the pleasure of playing music socially and rehearsing at the Jamberoo Uniting Church, 11 Wyalla Rd, Jamberoo. New players always welcome – queries can be directed to KJcommunitymusic@bigpond.com

Filigree – mixed chamber group (strings/flutes/recorder/guitars) rehearses fortnightly on Thursdays 6:30pm to 8pm. Next rehearsal is 5th March. Directed by Christine Buurman, the group is open to players at all points on the learning curve. This term sees a new program of music from the movies from classics such as Moon River and Autumn Leaves to modern favourites like Pirates of the Carribean.

KJ String Orchestra – classical repertoire for strings with occasional guest soloists. The group rehearses fortnightly on Thursdays 6:30pm to 8pm. Next rehearsal is 27 February. Conductor Dal Oldham has put together a varied program of works by Mendelssohn, Debussy, Prokofiev and more recent composers.

Folk Group -For playing folk tunes or songs from Australia, England, Scotland, Ireland, America or from anywhere that you find a tune or a song appealing to play or sing. Fortnightly on Wednesdays 6:30pm to 9pm. Next session is 26th February.

The folk groups Saturday social / playing day is on again Saturday 21 March  from 11am to 2pm – BYO lunch and a coin for the jar. This month we have the great honour of welcoming Helen Romeo to lead this workshop. A veritable Folk Treasure, Helen is passionate about the preservation and publishing of Australian music, song and dance. Helen plays English concertina and has been a member of bush bands since the 1970s and member of the Bush Music Club. She also coordinates Saplings, an initiative of the Bush Music Club which introduces Australian music and song to children who already play an instrument. For more info about

Slow Bluegrass – American folk played at an inclusive pace. All are welcome to join in. Playing sessions happen fortnightly on Wednesdays 6:30pm to 9pm. Next session is 4 March and we’ll be doing a special recording Ashokan Farewell.
