The above mural, painted by Kane ‘Trait’ Horspool, is situated at the rear of the new Warilla library.
The mural depicts the Blue Banded Bee, which is native to the site on which the library is constructed. Trait describes himself as a conservationist and is interested in local environmental issues. The artwork also includes a subtle message about the impact of plastic on our environment. The recently completed lifeguard tower at Warilla Beach will also be complemented by a mural wrapping around the four solid concrete walls of the structure. The local artist, Claire Foxton, has completed many artworks of this scale in the Illawarra and internationally, including a mural in Oak Flats and at Stockland Shellharbour.
Her “coastal botanic” design incorporates native species of flora found nearby to waterways in the City including the Coastal Banksia and Maidenhair Fern. The artwork is currently underway so give Claire a wave if you’re going past!
