Kiama Jamberoo Community Music Association

We’re excited to share the news that aria award winning oud player Joseph Tawadros and his brother James, percussion virtuoso, are again touring Australia. Following a three day stint performing at the Sydney Opera House, they will do a single concert on the South Coast on their way to Canberra. Kiama Jamberoo Community Music Association is again happy to be hosting them and the performance will be held in the beautiful historic Berry Uniting Church at 7:30pm on Friday 28th June 2019. Friday 31st May – Sunday 2nd June Nowra Anglican College presents the Disney musical Beauty and the Beast at Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre Nowra Popular with young and old audiences, the musical is based on the classic fairy tale with Lyrics by Howard Ashman & Tim Rice and Music by Alan Menken. Friday 7th June – Sunday 9th June Kiama Loves Country Festival 3 days of multi-award winning Country music artists as well as local talents in and around Kiama. Saturday 1st – 10th June Seechange Festival at Jervis Bay featuring creative and performing arts, culture and cuisine, the festival is an exciting celebration of Jervis Bay’s creativity. Musical events include 2nd June Music Day Out with local and regional musicians drawing on roots, latin, blues, Spanish, Middle Eastern and everything in between. On 5th June pianist Gary Smith and Annie Van Tilburg playing violin and cello perform an evening of music from classic to contemporary composers – there will be wine & nibbles too. 6th June moves under the stars for a drumming workshop at Paperbark Camp – warming up with hearty soup and mulled wine, the drummers will spend 75 minutes creating a communal sound amongst the towering gumtrees. https://seechangefestival.net.au/

Friday 28th June 7:30pm Joseph & James Tawadros return as guests of the KJ Community Music Association. This time the concert will be in the beautiful Berry Uniting Church. The brothers will present an intimate evening of music and story telling . Joseph is an Aria award winning composer and master of the Oud, a Middle Eastern Lute. James is a world class percussionist and soloist and together they present a thrilling mix of Middle Eastern, Jazz and traditional sounds and contemporary innovationsTheir tour takes them to locations around Australia including the Woodend Winter Arts festival in Victoria, the Blue Mountains, Canberra, Melbourne recital hall and Sydney Opera House. Their only concert last year on the South Coast, in Jamberoo, was a sell-out and the audience was enthralled by the musical performance and Joseph’s engaging banter. Audience members felt privileged to have had the opportunity to see the performance in a small venue that allowed for such rapport. Rehearsals take place at Jamberoo Chapel Soundspace at Uniting Church hall, 11 Wyalla Road, Jamberoo for all groups except Chapel Consort which rehearses at Shoalhaven Heads – full details below;

KJ String Orchestra  Rehearses Thursdays fortnightly 6:30 – 8pm with the next rehearsal  on Thursday 30th May. Conductor Dal Oldham has introduced a fresh and exciting new set of music to work on. Derived from great composers of the Austro-Hungarian tradition, the program includes Viennese Waltz, Bohemian Dance and more. Fritz Kreisler, Johann Strauss, Franz Liszt and Antonin Dvorak are amongst the featured composers. String players are welcome to join – no auditions but if you are unsure then feel free to email us to discuss (the music requires a minimum of about Grade 5 ability but we welcome more experienced players too) The next performance date is Thursday 31st October 2019 6:30pm.

Wood & Wind – Combined Chamber Group (Strings/Wind)  This group rehearses Thursdays fortnightly at 6:30pm with the next rehearsal on Thursday 6th June. This term we have started working on a Renaissance program and have plans for a Winter social on Sunday 25th August 2019.The group features an eclectic combination of strings, flutes, guitars and more. New players of all levels of ability welcomed. Music director Pam Harris has also invited the group to participate in performing at her Studio Concert at Berry Uniting Church 11am Saturday 29th June so they are preparing for that now.

Folk Music Session for playing folk tunes or songs from Australia, England, Scotland, Ireland, America or from anywhere that you find a tune or a song appealing to play or sing. Wayne Millar leads both this Folk and the Bluegrass group. Next rehearsal is Wednesday 29th May 6:30-8:30pm.  We also run a monthly Saturday Jamberoo Folk Session from 11 – 2:30pm featuring guest artists / local folk musicians in a jam session style workshop that is both social and a chance to mine musical jewels of the folk tradition. Next Jamberoo Saturday Session is Saturday 15th June and the theme is “playing in parts” led by the delightful and talented Marg Sherringham. Marg is well known to those in the music association for her talents on guitar, mandolin and violin and also crosses genres from the folk scene to play classical and contemporary with our Wood & Wind group. Music will be provided, all are welcome to participate and BYO lunch.

Bluegrass and Old Time Session accommodates musicians that are looking for a bluegrass session where the tunes are played at a slow pace- open to all levels including beginners. For the more experienced there is a chance to play at a faster pace after the tunes have been played slowly. Next rehearsal is Wednesday 5th June 6:30-8:30pm. Chapel Consort meets fortnightly on Friday evenings at GMS Lowlands, Shoalhaven Heads. Next date is Friday 31st May at 6pm and we are working towards a recital at one of the local aged care facilities. This group is modelled on a traditional English college/church choir but with the difference that the singers are also competent instrumentalists. If you are a good sight-reader and interested in classical, sacred and early music and if you enjoy singing for your supper, come try us out. Concert Opportunity for string players in Orange! Orange Symphony Orchestra is inviting confident string players (at least grade 4 and above) to join them for a series of concerts Friday 2nd – Sunday 4th August (with optional Thursday 1st concert). They are performing Beethoven Violin Concerto with Andrew Baker as soloist as well as Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5.There is no cost to participate but you would need to organise own accommodation/meals etc.Essentially it will be a fun weekend away in Orange playing some great music. Artist Applications now open for Illawarra Folk Festival From 16 – 19 January 2020 the annual festival features four exciting summer days filled with folk, world, roots, bluegrass, gypsy and Celtic music as well as workshops, poetry, comedy and dance. Performer applications close 30th May 2019 so head to https://illawarrafolkfestival.com.au/  This will be the 35th annual Illawarra Folk Festival and a highlight is the violin as the featured instrument. Volunteer applications open in August and stallholders in October.

Creative Kids Vouchers are currently available at www.service.nsw.gov.au These $100 vouchers can be used towards music lessons from a registered provider and are a terrific way to give children an introduction to learning a musical instrument. Christine from Epics Music is a local registered provider. In addition to her work with piano, composition and music therapy, she runs Music 101 classes for parents of budding musicians and has associates who can teach a range of other instruments. Jamberoo weekly Singing Circle has started up and gets together Mondays 6:30pm – 7:30pm at Jamberoo Chapel Soundspace, 11 Wyalla Rd. This independent group is run by Kate Armstrong,  singer songwriter who is also experienced in teaching yoga and vocal toning. Kate uses posture work and vocal warmups with a view to incorporating rhythm, harmony and group singing to enhance wellbeing and relaxation. Sessions will be $15 but first session is free. Bathurst String Orchestra Workshop September 27 – September 29, 2019 An opportunity to indulge intensively in the wondrous world of string playing within a friendly and social atmosphere. Adult & older teenagers of all standards are invited to experience string orchestra & small group rehearsals, tutorials, yoga for musicians and a range of other musically interesting things.
