EROS Big Band

Gerringong Music Club is delighted to host the EROS Big Band for its concert ‘In The Mood’ on Sunday 5 May at 2pm in Gerringong Town Hall.

The 17 piece EROS Big Band was formed just over 40 years ago by Maurice Easton. He had always loved the swinging big bands and in the 70s he returned from a USA trip with a bag full of big band arrangements.

One of the aims of the band was to give young and not so young musicians the opportunity of playing in a big band. Because of the mixed ages the band was originally called by the acronym YROS “(Young Rockers and Old Swingers)” Big Band. The band’s first gig was for Friends of the Earth and the location was a friendly cow paddock at Oaks Flat!

Since then it has played at many impressive engagements including the Australian Jazz Convention, the opening of theelectrification of the Illawarra Railway, Kiama’s 150th Anniversary Ball, Sydney’s College of Law Ball, and the Bowral Tulip Time Festival. The band has over 300 arrangements in its library and its membership includes some of the South Coast’s best musicians.

In 1992 the band’s name was changed to EROS standing for Elderly Rockers and Old Swingers, as the young members had become a bit older! Following the sad passing of fine trombonist, composer and arranger Wal Gregory last year.

The current musical director is the young and talented Des Canning on lead trombone. The band plays regularly at the Wollongong Master Builders Club on the 1st Thursday of every month.

Tickets $25 at the door for visitors, free for members, students and children. Afternoon tea available.
