Friends of Kiama Library welcome Patrick Kennedy on Saturday 3 November at 2.30pm in Kiama Family History Centre, Railway Parade, Kiama.
Patrick is the author of Long Bay : A Prison History and will be showing a video clip and giving a powerpoint presentation on the fascinating history of the gaol.
Long Bay has housed some of Australia’s most notorious criminals: Tilly Devine, Darcy Dugan, Russell Cox, Neddy Smith, Chow Hayes, Bernie Matthews, Rex Jackson and Roger Rogerson have all spent time behind its bars.
Patrick Kennedy has a strong personal connection. His parents worked there as medical staff and he grew up metres from the outer wall, later working there as one of Australia’s Intensive Care Paramedics, then running the Media Unit. He takes us behind the scenes of Australia’s hardest prison, telling the stories of inmates, prison officers and nurses. Kennedy is the only author to have been given access to the Forensic Hospital. Long Bay is his fourth book. It is full of contemporary and historic photos and is the first comprehensive history of Long Bay Correctional Centre.
Books are for sale and signature. Patrick tells me that they available in bookshops for $50 but he is selling them on Saturday for the discount price of $35. Cash only (No EFTPOS).
All welcome.
Afternoon tea provided. $5 for members of FOKL and $8 for visitors.
